Malappuram

Malappuram carries many scars. Wounded by the Khilafat movement and Mappila riots, Malappuram is where the storm of struggle first brewed in Keralam. A land top of hills, Malappuram was the military headquarters of the Zamorins of Kozhikode since time immemorial. Known for its rustic beauty the district is enriched by three vast rivers flowing through it - the Chaliyar, the Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzha. Surrounded by Nilgiri hills on the east and Arabian Sea on the west, this place is a solace away from the hustle-bustle of the city life. The district is also a hub of rich cultural traditions prevalent since the time of monarchs. The splendour of Muslim architecture is seen in their age-old mosques and traditional houses. A famous centre for Hindu-Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy, the temples and mosques of this region are well known for their spectacular festivals.

Kozhikode

Kozhikode is the land of the honest and the humble. Called the 'city of truth', it is the candour of its masses and riches of the land combined that brought trade ships and along with them Arab, African, Chinese and Portuguese merchants to these pristine shores one after the other. This is where Vasco Da Gama first set foot. The whiff of history continues to permeate the lanes, bazaars and business hubs of this great port of yesteryears. A stamp of exuberance extends through the historical, cultural, and architectural facets of the city. Even the cuisine which starts with scrumptious non-vegetarian stews and fluffy white appams and pathiris in the morning and stretches to ghee-laden spice-scented biryani at noon to unnakai, halwa, payasams and stuffed sweets for desserts has a distinct undertaste of opulence. Here, everyday is a feast and every guest, a kin.

Must-Visit Destinations

Beypore

The flagship vessel that Lord Horatio Nelson journeyed in, when he defeated Napolean Bonaparte in the Battle of Trafalgar was constructed in Beypore. So was Cleopatra's trading vessels in the 1st century AD. Beypore, synonymous with ship building, is a village on the banks of the Challiyaar river. The Dhows or Urus built here have travelled the seven seas over time immemorial. Take this quick 10 km detour from the city to appreciate India's maritime history and to watch the Khalasis (dock workers) at work. Simple wooden winches called davars and long wooden handles called kazhas along with thick coir ropes are used to build this 1000 tonne ship. It takes around two years to build an uru, which is typically 150 feet long and 50 feet wide. Most computations and instructions are transferred as a legacy in the form of verses, with each stanza being dedicated to the details of a particular part of the ship. While you are here, do visit the pulimuttu (stone bridge) at Beypore beach that extends a kilometer and a half into the sea.

Mananchira Square

Originally built by Zamorin Mana Vikrama as a bathing pool, the Mananchira freshwater lake and the lush premise is an evening relaxing spot for the young and adults alike. It was on November 9, 1994, that the park was opened for the public. Situated at the heart of the city and a five-minute walk from the railway station, this could be the first place to drop by during your trip to Kozhikode. Stone strewn paths are designed, surrounding the rectangular boundary of the lake and concrete benches are placed throughout the park. The park has a laterite sculpted wall serving as a fence. Though the lake was built for bathing and leisure, the district municipal council passed the rule to preserve the freshwater for drinking purposes. It is not possible to miss the statues in the park. Be it V K Krishna Menon's statue or the gigantic dinosaurs raging from between the trees. Right outside the entrance there are vendors selling roasted peanuts, and vegetables and berries immersed in salt brine. This is where the spirit of Karithinadan is chained. Karithinadan, a native tribal who helped build the road from Calicut to Wayanad was shot dead by a British engineer. Teak, rosewood and local varieties of wood collected from forests of Nilambur, were drifted in rafts through the Kallayi and Chaliyar rivers. Close to 300 wood processing and furniture units operated on the Kallayi banks till early 1970s, employing more than 25,000 workers. This massive rock, much dreaded by navigators, was once a vantage point for the Marakkars to attack the invading Portuguese. The entire crew of a Portuguese ship was killed here. When the Portuguese conquered the land, they resorted to throwing troublemakers off the rocks into the sea and hence it came to be known as Sacrifice Rock. The beautiful natural engravings on the rock are worth exploring. A one-hour boat ride from the beach will take visitors to Velliyamkallu.

Wayanad

History lies asleep in the many caves, forts and temples of Wayanad. With its tribal traditions and forest secrets, Wayanad makes for a soul stirring retreat. Forests entwined with tea plantation estates followed by the ruins of Jain temples and a handful of waterfalls. The composition of Wayanad is surprisingly vivid. A mud road would culminate in Chegadi, the first entirely agricultural village pearled in the midst of a forest. Boundaries are a blur and it is hard to draw a line of where one ends and the other begins in Wayanad.

Must-Visit Destinations

Edakkal Caves

You are seated on a moss-clad rock at the centre of the conclave in Edakkal, Wayanad. The rocks have huddled together around you. Their heads collide as if to discuss a secret, which is a series of petroglyphs inscribed on the caves. Chiselled on the walls are masked men holding jars, animals, stars, wheels and other shapes; and in between these, four transcripts from the Neolithic and Mesolithic age. One has been roughly deciphered as "Here lived a man once who freed us from the beasts; this is inscribed for the fame of his clan." When you come across the drawings portraying a gallant caveman or an ace hunter pouncing upon a tiger, you think of the person who inscribed this note and the respect that he deserves from his modern-day counterparts. If trekking and sweating is your idea of a vacation then the climb to the Edakkal Caves is the right pick.

Sulthan Bathery

A dilapidated fort forms the epicentre of Sulthan Bathery, which gets its name from the arms battery of the erstwhile King of Mysore, Tipu Sultan. At the Jain Temple in Sulthan Bathery, religion and history collide. Built by the Jains who migrated from Mysuru to Wayanad, this shrine was conquered by Tipu Sultan after which it served as the ammunition store or battery for Tipu's army. The Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, situated nearby, offers many such insights and is a storehouse of rare archaeological tribal finds. Earlier known as Ganapathivattom, Sultan Bathery is the largest town in Wayanad district and is home to the Edakkal caves. To explore the carvings from the Neolithic age, take an hour-long steep climb to the Edakkal Caves.

Mananthavady

Once ruled by Keralam Varma Pazhassi Raja, the lion of Keralam, Mananthavady has played a great role in the history and evolution of Keralam. Today, owing to the diversity of the landscape, Mananthavady is an ideal spot for a cycling expedition. Begin with Pazhassi Kudeeram, a museum and tomb that pays homage to one of the greatest rulers in the history of the state, and trudge along to the Tirunelli Temple, and the Latin Church built in Victorian architectural model that is a reminder of the colonial past of Wayanad. Take a pitstop at the 7000-year-old Ambukuthy caves which is adorned with new and old age pictorial writings. End the trail at the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary. Kannur

Kannur is the land of everyday gods. Here, you let go of fear as you come across blood-drinking yakshis, serpent gods and animal deities. Most of this stems up during a camphor-lit performance of Theyyam, held in serpent shrines adjacent to moonlit paddy fields or as you witness the primitive essence of animals embody the oiled bodies practicing Kalari moves and achieving tricky close-to-impossible physical postures. The cradle of such colourful folk art forms, Kannur is said to be the ancient port of Naura, from whose shores King Solomon's ships collected timber to build the great temple of Jerusalem. Known even to the Greeks, the Romans and the Arabs, Kannur's trade links go back a long way. Acclaimed by celebrated traveller Marco Polo as the great emporium of the spice trade and by Jawaharlal Nehru, as the garden of India, this district showcases its remarkable history in the ancient forts, old shrines and cultural fests that dot its scenic landscape.

Must-Visit Destinations

Thalassery

Bored and a fish-out-of-water Sir Arthur Wellesley on idle mornings gathered his butler, dhobi, gardener and others for a game of cricket. Thalassery thus became the first town in India to be introduced to this foreign sport. In 1860, they got their own ground and a guild called The Town Cricket Club. The famous maidan which hosted the first matches in the country is situated on one end of the Gundert road. On the opposite end is the park, which is named after Herman Gundert, a German scholar who compiled a Malyalam-English dictionary. This modest town is indebted to the colonial period for more than just cricket and dictionaries. It was here the first cakes in the state were baked. The legacy lives on through Mambally Bakery which was patronized by the Britishers for their cakes and biscuits. Established in 1880 the bakery is still around with an assortment of both traditional and an English fare. The Petti Pathiri, stuffed bread with meat and egg is a must-indulge delicacy. The colonial influence is now constrained to old and bold edifices like the Tellicherry Fort built by the British, Overbury's Folly - a colonial building turned restaurant, and Gundert's Bungalow.

Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan Temple

Muthappan is a Hunter god. A deity who demands toddy, paan-betel and fried fish as offerings. The Parassinikadavu Muthappan temple, situated on the banks of Valapattanam River, has two idols of dogs on either side of the entrance. Here, dogs are divine, thanks to the myth about a dog who followed Muthappan when he decided to leave home after being chided by his Brahmin father for being friends with the tribal kids and eating fried fish. Every evening, in the yellow light of oil lamps, the Theyyam-artist wearing a fish-shaped headgear studded with chipped mirror, who plays Muthappan sits on a wooden peedam (stool) in a trance. The god is said to possess the artist who then begins to recite the ritual song in sync with the drum beats of Tudi, Kuzhal and Chenda. The Theyyam dance has different steps known as Kalaasams. With a shield and kadthala (sword) in his hands he circles the shrine, runs to the courtyard and continues dancing in the open air. There are plenty of pleasure boating options and houseboat cruises at the Parassini River. Accommodation is available nearby. The snake park here is the only one of its kind in the State. Snake demonstrations conducted every hour draw large crowds. Vismaya Infotainment Centre, one of the largest water theme parks, is situated here. Ph: 2782850 (Open 0830 - 1730 hrs everyday).

This is Asia's largest cinnamon estate and the associated processing plant is still functional. Here, you can watch the step by step preparation of the cinnamon spice and the extraction of cinnamon oil. Lord Brown kept a record of the land transactions and this resulted in a new Department of Land Registration in British Government in Asia region.
